BRONX, NEW YORK (BNO NEWS) – A Bronx, New York man was sentenced to 15 months to four years of imprisonment and to pay a fine of $15,000 for his role in promoting a dogfight that inflicted cruelty and death on a young pit bull, prosecutors announced on Wednesday.

Alexander Estephane, 45, converted his basement into a dog fighting ring made of plywood. On June 14, 2008, a dog fight event took place in Estephane’s basement. The New Jersey Police developed information during an investigation into dog fighting in New Jersey. Authorities proceeded to stop the illegal enterprise.

Law enforcement agents recovered 16 pit bulls, including a badly injured dog in a cage that died later. Additional animals, break sticks, and testosterone-filled syringes were seized in the residence too.

Juan Toledo, 40, of Paterson, New Jersey, was also arrested and found guilty of the same crime. His sentence is scheduled for March 18.
