A Brazilian university student who was dismissed from her school for wearing a mini-skirt to school has been awarded 15,000 pounds in damages. Her lawyers however say they expected the amount to be higher.

The student, Geisy Arruda was expelled from her school for wearing a red miniskirt to school. The school never found Arruda’s dress entertaining, axing her from the university as a result. They defended their action by saying that Arruda’s dress was disturbing her class.

The school, Bandeirante University in Sao Paolo described Arruda’s action as “flagrant lack of respect for ethical principles, academic dignity and morality”. The school however backed down on their decision after the country’s Education Ministry accused the school of “intolerance and discrimination”.

Arruda’s expulsion caused widespread condemnation in Brazil. Arruda’s lawyers said the university’s decision trampled her dignity.

Certainly the settlement will help both parties in the case, but as to whether the earlier decision by the school will be forgiven can only be known after sometime. Another issue is whether Arruda will back down on her dressing as well.
