Brazil lights up a floating Christmas tree

Rio de Janeiro, Nov 28 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Brazil officially launched the festive season of Christmas by switching on a massive floating Christmas tree. The Christmas tree was lighted during a ceremony on Saturday which was preceded by massive fireworks.

Guinness World Records recognizes the 85-meter, 542-tonne tree as the world’s largest Christmas tree. It is located on Rio de Janeiro’s Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon where it has been since 1996 when it was first lighted. The sight is one of the major tourist attractions to the city.

The tree casts special images on the sky with its 3.3 million Christmas lights which could be viewed from several distance away when it is switched on. Before switching it off on the 6th of January, the tree will be floated to other parts of the lagoon. The organizers say about 10,000 people came to the event last night.

Brazil is the host of the 2016 Olympic Games. The country launched the logo of the Paralympic event which will take place a year after the major Olympic Games.

Christmas is a special occasion for Christians. The period is used to mark the birth of JESUS CHRIST. It is marked on the 25 of December every year.
