“Bonnie And Clyde” Director Arthur Penn Passes Away At 88

pennOct 3, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Arthur Penn, who is well known for his movies like “Bonnie and Clyde”, “Little Big Man” and “Night Moves” breathed his last on Tuesday at his Manhattan home, his friend and business partner Evan Ball announced the news. Evan Ball said that Arthur Penn had been ill for about a year but he did not specify any reason for his death. Arthur Penn’s daughter, Molly Penn, however, said that her father lost his battle owing to a heart disease. Arthur Penn was 88-years-old.

Evan Ball said in his statement that Arthur Penn’s memorial service will be held by the end of this year. Arthur Penn first made his name on Broadway as a director and his plays “The Miracle Worker” and “All the Way Home” were nominated for Tony Awards. His highly acclaimed movie “Bonnie and Clyde” was a mixture of humor and mayhem and it became a landmark film in the New Hollywood era. Paul Schrader, the veteran director and writer expressed his condolences at the unfortunate demise of the renowned director by saying that Arthur Penn gifted American movies the “sensibility” of European Art Films and “paved” the way for the new generation to be more forward about portraying sex and violence in movies.

The American actor and producer Warren Beatty, who worked with Arthur Penn in “Bonnie and Clyde” remembered the director by saying that he would treasure the “singularly honest, joyful, adventurous” intelligence of Arthur Penn both as a “collaborator” and his loving friend. Arthur Penn is survived by his wife Peggy Maurer, his son, daughter and four grandsons.
