November 29th, 2009 - 8:20 pm ICT by Aishwarya Bhatt ( Leave a comment )Uglovka, Nov 29 (THAINDIAN NEWS) A high-speed train was de-railed which was traveling from Moscow to St. Petersburg. It killed at least 26 people, and it was derailed by a powerful homemade bomb in what Russian officials said Saturday was an act of terrorism. The train was carrying more than 650 people, and was traveling about 130 m.p.h. when a huge bomb sent it off the tracks and resulted in a huge train crash of the Russian train.
The head of Russia’s Federal Security Service, Alexander Bortnikov, said that investigating bomb experts found pieces of an explosive device that detonated Friday night as the train sped over it, gouging a 5-foot crater and strewing smoking wreckage over a rural stretch of track. He said the bomb exploded with the force of 15 pounds of TNT.
Rescue operations were on, and police and other rescuers kept on searching for the bodies, and the number of death bodies conflicted drastically. The Russian Health Ministry said that 26 people were killed, up to 100 people were injured and 18 people were still missing. However the Prosecutor General’s Office said 30 people had died, and 60 others were injured.
“Indeed, this was a terrorist attack,” said Vladimir Markin, a spokesman for the investigative committee of Russia’s General Prosecutor’s Office, according to the Interfax news agency. Bortnikov said a terrorism inquiry has been opened.
Russian police are still inspecting the scene of the crime and the damaged train car at the site of a derailment near the town of Uglovka on Saturday.
