Boeing 737 carrying 103 people crashes near Indonesian airport; dozens hurt

MANOKWARI, INDONESIA (BNO NEWS) — A Boeing 737-300 belonging to Merpati Nusantara Airlines crashed near an airport in Indonesia’s West Papua Province on early Tuesday, officials said. At least two dozen people were injured.

The incident happened around 11 a.m. local time when the plane crashed approximately 300 meters from the runway at Rendani Airport, an airport in Manokwari. A total of 103 passengers and crew were on board the aircraft, which may have overshot the runway before it crashed nearby.

Pictures released by local news outlets showed a heavily damaged aircraft in a stream of water, though parts of the cabin seemed to be intact. At least 20 people were believed to have been injured, but their was no immediate word on their conditions.

The Kompas newspaper reported that the plane landed during bad weather.
