June 19, 2010 (Pen Men at Work): The remains of the reputed chess player Bobby Fischer, is expected to be exhumed after the Supreme Court of Iceland gave its decision. This decision, in fact, reverses an earlier decision made by a lower court at Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland.

The world class chess player had died two years before, in 2008. He died intestate, almost 35 years, after winning over his bitterest opponent Boris Spassky of the Soviet Union. So intense was the rivalry between them, that the people had heralded his victory as the winning of the Cold War. However, it is only now that the existence of the 9 year old Jinky Young has come to light and his estate worth $2 million is under dispute.

The court ruled in favor of the exhumation of Bobby Fischer’s body as it wanted the child to discover her true identity. All claims about the invalidity of the reason were ruled out firmly by the court. The old ruling was revoked after new evidence came to light. Proof of Marilyn Young, the girl’s mother, receiving money regularly from Fischer was placed before the court which prompted it to alter the earlier decision.

The estate is now a battle of sorts with his erstwhile wife Miyoko Watai as well as two of his American born nephews contesting as well. The government of the United States has also joined in the fray as it is looking to recover the unpaid tax money.

Fischer, had lived in Iceland for three years before succumbing to kidney failure. The law of Iceland states that an estate of a deceased person can be divided among the children and the spouse in a two thirds-one third ratio.

A friend of Fischer stated that he would indeed be very unhappy if Jinky did not get to inherit at least a part of his estate. Marlyn Young, on the other hand simply conveyed her happiness at being given a chance to prove that Bobby had been the father of her daughter.
