Body found inside building hit by 7-alarm fire in Chinatown, New York on Sunday
April 13th, 2010 - 12:44 pm ICT by BNO NewsNEW YORK CITY (BNO NEWS) — The body of an elderly male was found inside a building that was destroyed in a massive 7-alarm fire which broke out in the Chinatown neighborhood of New York City on late Sunday, authorities said on Monday. More than three dozen others were also injured.
Rescue crews first responded to the scene at 285 Grand Street after a 911 call at 10.14 p.m. EDT on Sunday evening. The first crew arrived at the scene at 10.16 p.m. The six-story building which was used for both commercial and residential means completely burned down. It also spread to a second building.
On Monday, fire officials said the body of an elderly male had been recovered. “He was found on the top floor,” a spokesman said.
Two other elderly civilians were taken to hospital in critical condition, while a third who inhaled smoke was hospitalized with minor injuries. An EMS worker and 29 firefighters were also hospitalized with other minor injuries, including one who had burns to his hands.
More than 250 firefighters and 60 fire trucks were battling the blaze.
