boatMar 25, (THAINDIAN NEWS) In an absolute new initiative to raise awareness about pollution at sea, a boat made entirely of plastic bottles commenced its journey last weekend. The boat which has aptly been named Plastiki, departed from San Francisco in California towards its destination Sydney, Australia on Saturday.

The Plastiki Project, which is the brainchild of banking heir David de Rothschild, has been made with approximately 12,000 plastic soda and water bottles, would be undertaking a journey of 11,000 nautical miles in order to reach its destination Sydney. The main aim behind this rather unique venture is to spread awareness and bring under focus that indiscriminate amount of pollution that is present in the oceans all across the world. While talking about the initiative, David de Rothschild revealed to a news source that pollution at the sea is an extremely pertinent issue that needs to be addressed and also emphasized that it was high time that we beat the waste existing in our oceans.

Meanwhile, those who are interested in knowing the day to day progress of the boat should not be disappointed as the 31 year old adventure lover is posting the details about the Plastiki’s progress through a social networking site. The environmentalist’s unique boat surely has all the necessary ingredients to inspire people to take the issue all the more seriously as it takes the recycling to a completely different height. The thousands of plastic bottles which were used to make the boat was pumped with carbon dioxide to give it durability and buoyancy. The craft, which was made over a period of four years, derives its power from wind, solar and sea turbines.
