Bishop Margot Kaessmann Resigns Due To Drunk-Driving

drenFeb 25, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Bishop Margot Kaessmann, the head of the Germany’s protestant church has given her resignation on Wednesday after she was nabbed by police authorities for drunken driving this weekend. The 51 year old who became the first woman to head Germany’s protestant church, resigned from the position of the council chairwoman of Germany’s Evangelical church.

While revealing her decision to resign from her duties, Margot Kaessmann told reporters on Wednesday that after the mistake that she has committed, her heart does not permit her to stay in the office and carry out her responsibilities. At the same time, she also expressed her apology to all her supporters who wanted her to continue with her duties and had voted for her.

Last Saturday, Margot Kaessmann was arrested from the central city of Hanover after police authorities stopped her while driving her luxury Volkswagen Phaeton as she passed through a red light which was at a distance of 500 meters from her home. On being examined it came to light that the 51 year old was driving under the influence of alcohol and was subsequently taken into custody. Owing to the incident, Margot Kaessmann faces a heavy fine and her driving license has also been revoked for a year.

While reacting to Margot Kaessmann’s resignation, German Chancellor Angela Merkel has stated that she recognized the bishop’s decision with respect as well as regret. In the statement, the German Chancellor also implied that she cherished the cooperation that Bishop Margot Kaessmann showcased while she held the post. However, any details regarding the bishop’s successor has not been available as yet.
