Birth Tourism accounts for only a small percentage of immigrant babies
September 6th, 2010 - 10:26 pm ICT by Aishwarya Bhatt ( Leave a comment )New York, Sep 6 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Republicans in United States are pushing for an amendment to the country’s 14th amendment that grants automatic citizenship to babies that are born in the United States.
The issue has been a contention for serious debate considering that 8 percent of all the children that were born in the United States in 2008 had at least one illegal immigrant parent.
People who think that the 14th Amendment should be changed argue that illegal immigrants are taken advantage of the law and making America their “labor ward” just to get citizen status for their children.
A case in question is an illegal migrant - Garcia. She has been living in America illegally for the past 14 years but the twins she is expecting will be granted automatic citizenship when they are born.
And she will remain an illegal migrant because under the new United States immigration laws, illegal migrants will not be given citizenship just because they give birth in the United States. Garcia’s husband has already been deported and she survives by selling tomatoes. But she maintains that her children should be Americans because they have not known any other country but America. “I think that children aren’t at fault for having been born here. My children always have lived here. They’ve never gone to another country,” according to Garcia.
