May 27, 2010 (Pen Men at Work): ‘Love conquers it all!’ is a phrase in which bride, Ally Smith, and beau, Mike Babineaux, have faith in entirely!

Ally Smith, an athletic college freshman, bumped into Mike Babineaux in 2006, and fell in love with him. Nevertheless, the following spring, Smith was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy, a heart muscle disease, which worsens the heart’s condition and also leads to its breakdown.

Only a heart transplant can rescue the patient suffering from this piteous condition. But the chief problem is that only 5 % of the people, who require a heart transplant, get one. A forceful therapy assists, but the chances of surviving a year with it are only 50%.

Babineaux was by Smith’s side the whole time she underwent her wearisome therapy and proposed to her in September 2008. Smith embraced the proposal but, as her condition went down the hill, she endeavoured to return the engagement ring back to Mike discarding her dreams of getting married.

Babineaux, however, refused to take the ring back and told Smith he was eager to walk down the aisle with her even if she was on her deathbed.

This medical drama cum romance has now achieved its happy ending thanks to modern medicine solutions.

Smith, who had failed to acquire a heart donor, was given the alternative of implanting a bionic heart by the doctors.

HeartMate II is a mechanical device – the bionic heart – which is implanted beside the patient’s heart. This helps it to take over the function of pumping from the weakened muscle allowing the heart to rest and nurse back to health in peace.

Even implanting the bionic heart is a major surgery and Smith had almost not survived the surgery.

Smith, who has been labelled “the bionic bride”, says that she is 100 % better now and that her thoughts always return to Mike and her wedding.
