Feb 11, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Due to the record snowfall, school closings remain the norm in all the affected school districts in the Northeast. Several schools have announced closure, some delayed openings and early closings. Long Island being one of the most severely affected places, Bellmore school district has announced closure of all schools due to inclement weather today, February 11. All before and after school activities have been canceled in schools. Tomorrow it would be the fifth day of school closures in Bellmore district.
Grand Avenue Middle School, Merrick Avenue Middle School, Sanford H. Calhoun High School, John F. Kennedy High School, W.C. Mepham High School, Meadowbrook Alternate Program, to name a few, are all closed due to the heavy layers of snow blanketing the region. The record blizzard has broken the nation’s century old record, bringing life to a standstill in the most severely affected regions. Thousands are without power and electricity in this excruciating cold. In many places, traffic has ground to a halt. With schools and offices closed due to inclement weather, many are working from home.
Flights have been canceled by the thousands and many highways and subways have been closed due to impossible weather conditions and accumulation of snow with strong winds complicating the situation. Amtrak railway service also scaled down operations due to severely inclement weather conditions. The storm has been nicknamed Snoverkill and Snowmageddon. People have tried to stock their refrigerators with excess food to tide over the grim situation, as a drive to the grocery store is also rendered impossible. Some grocery stores reported running of basic supplies like milk.
