BRUSSELS (BNO NEWS) — A gunman killed his teenage son and a police officer before killing himself in the Belgian city of Bilzen on Sunday, local media reported.

According to the Belgian newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws (HLN), the gunman first shot his 15-year-old son to death at his home before going to his ex-girlfriend’s apartment, where he turned the gun on her. The woman was able to escape unharmed and alerted police.

The gunman returned home and then opened fire as four police officers tried to go inside. A 54-year-old police officer was struck by three bullets in the back, killing him.

Several hours later, special police forces entered the home and discovered the gunman who had apparently died of a self-inflicted gunshot.

A police official refused to comment on the incident, and said a press conference was being prepared at the Bilzen city hall.
