Belarusian President Lukashenko says Minsk bombing case is solved
April 14th, 2011 - 12:16 am ICT by BNO NewsMINSK, BELARUS (BNO NEWS) — Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko on Wednesday announced that the deadly Minsk metro bombing was solved after a one-day investigation.
According to the BelTA news agency, the President made the announcement at a government session in Minsk. Two individuals were arrested overnight and were questioned by the State Security Committee of Belarus (KGB).
“The case was solved today. KGB and police needed only one day to carry out a smooth operation yesterday. They apprehended the perpetrators without noise and shooting. The criminals gave their testimony,” said Lukashenko.
The Belarusian leader also added that the testimonies revealed who perpetrated the bombing and how the terrorist attack was carried out. However, he remarked that the reason for the blast is currently under investigation.
“Analysts, investigators, and experts precisely rebuilt the timeline of the crime, sifted through a massive amount of audio and video data and, I am particularly pleased about it,” added the Belarusian president.
KGB is currently investigating any connection of the two detained individuals with the explosion in Vitebsk in 2005 and the deadly blast in Minsk in 2008. The two people, whose names were not disclosed, are Belarusian citizens and had known each other for a long time.
On Monday evening, a powerful bomb blast ripped through a metro station in Minsk causing the death of 12 people and injuring about 149 more. The explosion happened at around 5.56 p.m. local time at the Oktyabrskaya metro station in Minsk, not far from the presidential residence.
With the exception of the 2008 bomb blast and two non-fatal bomb blasts in 2005, Belarus is fairly unknown to terrorism and Monday’s attack was the first fatal terrorist attack in the country’s modern history. There are no known terrorist groups which target Belarus specifically.
