The commuters headed in the north direction could only use one lane and the other one is used by the traffic headed towards south.

The resulting clog had caused a delay in the movement of the traffic for about 30 minutes, especially for the ones traveling to and from the Eastern Shore. The Southward bound lanes were shut down on one of the bridge’s atrial expanses. Traffic however was kept mobilized by utilizing the northbound lanes in an alternating arrangement.

The maintenance work that had ensued because of the accident took up most part of the day and paced down the the free flow of the traffic to an absolute slow trickle. Tom Anderson, the deputy director of the bridge tunnel, said that the two barges had struck the trestle around 6:20 a.m. One of the two barges was loaded with rocks and the other one was packed with heavy equipment. The emergency crews had immediately turned up at the scene of the incident, trying to access the damage and plunging in to the repair works. Things have now been brought under control fortunately.

The bridge-tunnel connects the Virginian Eastern Shore with the mainland at the Virginia Beach, near Norfolk.
