Port-au-Prince, Jan 13 (THAINDIAN NEWS) As Haiti lies in ruins due to the 7.0 earthquake that struck and devastated the region, help and all types of aid is pouring in, from all over the world. US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton promised that her country would also provide assistance to Haitians. “The United States is offering our full assistance to Haiti and to others in the region. We will be providing both civilian and military disaster relief and humanitarian assistance and our prayers are with the people who have suffered, their families and their loved ones.”
Even the US President Barack Obama endorsed her stand. “We are just now beginning to learn the extent of the devastation. But the reports and images that we’ve seen of collapsed hospitals, crumbled homes and men and women carrying their injured neighbors through the streets are truly heart-wrenching,” Mr. Obama said.
Besides mobilizing help for the victims of the earthquake, the President said that his administration is also trying to locate all the missing U.S. Embassy employees and their families in the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince in addition to other Americans who live in Haiti. The Haitian ambassador to the US, Raymond Joseph is also asking for help and has asked all the other countries to come forward and support Haiti in the country’s darkest hour.
Americans who are trying to locate family members in Haiti should contact the State Department at 888-407-4747.
