Dec 19, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Whistle-blowing website WikiLeaks received a setback recently when Bank of America, considered to be one of the world’s largest bank, severed all ties with the whistle-blower and refused to handle its transactions in the future. With its latest decision, Bank of America has joined the bandwagon of a number of other financial institutions which has disassociated itself from WikiLeaks in the wake of its release of confidential diplomatic cables of many nations, especially United States, that has sparked a huge outrage among political leaders all over the world.
The fact that Bank of America would not be handling payments of the whistle-blowing website was announced by the financial institution through a statement that it released on Saturday. The statement read that the decision was taken after taking into consideration a reasonable belief that WikiLeaks might be involved in certain activities which go against the internal policies of the bank of processing payments. Apart from stating that the bank would not be carrying out any financial transaction which has links to WikiLeaks, Bank of America did not divulge any other details regarding the matter.
While responding to the decision taken by the North-Carolina based bank, the whistle-blowing website posted a message on the micro-blogging site Twitter in which it urged the ‘freedom-loving’ citizens of the country to close their Bank of America accounts while also making an appeal to businesses to ‘place your funds somewhere safer’. Apart from Bank of America, the other institution that have already stopped any kind of association with WikiLeaks include MasterCard, PayPal, among others.
