rhinoSouth Africa, July 20, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Despite several laws being enacted to ensure the protection of wildlife, the law enforcement officers have not been able to make much progress in ensuring the safety of wild animals. A rhinoceros is the latest victim of a poaching case in South Africa where it has been reported that the last female rhinoceros in a game reserve close to the city of Johannesburg met with her death when she fell prey to the activities of poachers who killed her for her horn which is highly valued in the country.

Wildlife experts have called for help from the government of South Africa after it has been reported that the number of deaths occurring in the country as a result of poaching has increased from 129 last year to more than 135 this year. It has been reported that the group of poachers who killed the nine year old female rhinoceros made use of tranquilizer guns from a helicopter so that they could easily hack off the rhino’s horns.

The horns of a rhino has compressed keratin fibre in them, a substance which is similar to hair and is used as a chief ingredient in a number of medicines manufactured in South Africa and countries of Asia. Wanda Mkutshulwa on behalf of all wildlife national parks in South Africa says that the killing which took place at the Krugersdorp game reserve should be taken very seriously. In fact it is high time that the South Africa police take strong measures to put an end to poaching in the country, a thing that the game reserve authorities are ill-equipped to do.
