REVELSTOKE, B.C. (BNO NEWS) — At least one person was killed and a second person was injured in a major avalanche on the Eagle Pass Mountain near Revelstoke, British Columbia on Friday, authorities said.

It happened about 1 kilometer past Eagle Pass Peak on Eagle Pass Mountain, near the unincorporated settlement of Three Valley Gap - which is southwest of Revelstoke. The first call came in at 3.57 p.m. local time.

Cpl Dan Moskaluk of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said the avalanche involved a group of snowmobilers and was categorized as a class 4 slide, meaning a large slide.

The Revelstoke RCMP is coordinating the emergency response with the assistance of the Provincial Emergency Coordination Center. Rescue teams have been dispatched and include search-and-rescue from Revelstoke RCMP Southeast District Air 3. RCMP Avalanche trained service dogs are also on the scene.

Moskaluk confirmed at least one person had been killed and a second person had been injured. “Rescuers are currently attempting to determine the size and number of the original group to confirm wether the two were the only persons involved,” Moskaluk said. “The BC Coroners Service has also been advised and have commenced their investigation.”

The incident comes only six days after a major avalanche killed two people and injured 31 others during a snowmobiling event on Boulder Mountain, also near Revelstoke.
