Aug 16 (THAINDIAN NEWS) According to ‘CNN’ news, an autopsy has been scheduled for today (Monday) in the death of the so called “Craigslist Killer” Philip Markoff, who was the former medical student who died in jail of what seems to be a suicide while facing murder charges, after he was found to be unresponsive in his cell on Sunday morning and was then pronounced dead by medics.
The cause of death is still under investigation, according a statement made by the Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley and the Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis. Markoff was in the Boston Massachusetts jail.
“Markoff was alone in his cell and all evidence collected thus far indicates that he took his own life,” the statement read. “Nonetheless, as with all such cases, a comprehensive investigation will be conducted to determine the facts and circumstances surrounding his death.”
The 24 year old was charged with the murder of Julissa Brisman on April 14, 2009, which occurred at the Boston Copley Marriot Hotel, where he allegedly shot and killed her during an attempted robbery. Brisman was a model and had advertised her services as a masseuse on Craigslist. It is believed that Markoff met her through that ad.
The representative of the family of Julissa released the following statement: “Their grief for Julissa is as fresh today as the day over a year ago when Markoff took Julissa away from them. The long-awaited criminal prosecution was their only opportunity to confront him, and now he has taken that away as well.”
The family also promised to “pursue other avenues to seek justice for Julissa, and help ensure that others do not suffer from such devastating, unnecessary violence.”
Markoff was also charged with the April 10, 2009 robbery of Trisha Leffler at the Westin Hotel located in Boston. She was held at gunpoint, bound, and robbed of eight hundred dollars in cash, and two hundred and fifty in American Express gift cards. He was also charged in an incident on April 16 at the Holiday Inn Express in Rhode Island.
At that time, Markoff was said to have tied up a dancer which he met through Craigslist, and demanded money from her, but fled when her husband showed up, according to Warwick Police Chief Col. Stephen McCartney.
