At least six dead in car bombing at Somalia airport

MOGADISHU, SOMALIA (BNO NEWS) — At least six people have died after a suicide car bomb exploded at the Adden Adde International Airport in the capital of Somalia on Thursday.

Flames and heavy smoke went into the sky when two vehicles attacked the first checkpoint, which prevented the vehicles from entering the airport in Mogadishu. The first explosion killed two guards and the driver at the gate, injuring another three people.

Local media say the attack has been claimed by Islamic group al-Shabaab., which is the first this month. Two weeks ago, on August 24, a violent attack led by the same group killed 33 people, including government officials, and wounded 30 after a suicide bomb at Hotel Muna.

The second vehicle reportedly was able to enter and gunmen shot and killed two African Union peacekeepers.

According to a UN report, at least 230 civilians have died , 400 wounded, and 23,000 displaced in the past two weeks as fighting between Somali Government and the Al-Shabaab militia continues.

Overall, almost 68,000 Somalis have fled this year to countries in the region. After Afghanistan and Iraq, Somalia generates the largest number of refugees in the world. As of the end of August, there were more than 614,000 Somali refugees and over 1.4 million displaced within the country.
