MEXICO CITY (BNO NEWS) — The death toll of Tuesday’s cargo plane crash near Monterrey International Airport in northern Mexico rose to seven, federal authorities said on Wednesday.

The Airbus A300 belonging to AeroUnion went down shortly after 11:30 p.m. local time while on approach to Monterrey and crashed near the airport, causing a major traffic chaos. According to information from Aero Union, there were five crew members on board.

Most of the aircraft crashed on the grounds of the airport, although a turbine and wing fell off and landed on a highway near the airport. A car was destroyed in the crash, killing two people, according to federal authorities. A large fire broke out after the aircraft crashed.

The aircraft was operating a scheduled freighter service, flight number 302, from Mexico City to Monterrey.

Airbus said it will provide full technical assistance to the French BEA (Bureau d’Enquetes et d’Analyses) and to the Mexican authorities, who are responsible for the investigation into the accident. A team of specialists from Airbus was dispatched to Mexico.

The A300 is a twin-engine wide-body aircraft. According to Airbus, the first A300 entered service in May 1974. In total, some 560 A300 aircraft have been delivered.
