KINSHASA (BNO NEWS) – At least 130 people were on Thursday killed after a boat carrying 250 passengers overturned in the Bandunu province of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo), the Xinhua news agency reported.

The tragedy took place on Wednesday night on a river in the Kwamouth region, the agency said. Local officials believe that the accident was apparently caused due to overloading.

The boat was carrying approximately 250 passengers at the time of the accident, including farmers, businessmen, and students. The National Transport Office said there could be over 200 deaths after all the bodies are recovered.

Teams are currently at the scene and are looking for survivors.
