At least 12 injured after 5.0-magnitude earthquake in southwest China

BEIJING (BNO NEWS) — A moderate earthquake struck southwest China on Sunday morning, seismologists said, injuring at least 12 people and damaging at least 300 houses, according to state media.

The 5.0-magnitude earthquake at 8.53 a.m. local time (0053 GMT) was centered approximately 90 miles (145 kilometers) east-northeast of Panzhihua, a city located in the Sichuan province. It struck about 20.4 miles (38.8 kilometers) deep, making it a shallow earthquake, the United States Geological Survey said.

According to the state-run Xinhua news agency, at least 12 people were injured and between 300 and 400 houses where damaged in two counties following the earthquake. Further details were not immediately available.

On May 12, 2008, a 7.9-magnitude earthquake struck the same province, causing more than 69,000 fatalities.
