MUNFORDVILLE, KENTUCKY (BNO NEWS) — Eleven people were killed on Friday morning in a wreck between a tractor-trailer and a van on Interstate 65 in southern Kentucky, local media said quoting Department of Transportation officials.

The accident involving a tractor-trailer and a 18-passenger van occurred at 5:30 a.m. near Munfordville, about 75 miles south of Louisville, according to WLKY Louisville.

The semi-truck crossed the median and crashed head-on into the van. The truck hit a rock wall and burned beyond recognition. The cable barrier didn’t stop the trailer as it isn’t designed to do so, although sometimes it has been successfully done.

The driver of the truck was traveling alone and was killed in the crash. Ten of twelve people in the van died. The passengers of the van were a Kentucky-based Mennonite family. Two children survived the wreck.

Interstate 65 has been closed temporarily on both northbound lanes at exit 58 as officials are still processing the scene. It is expected that I-65 will be closed at least for 8 hours.
