Chicago, Nov.21, (THAINDIAN NEWS) The giant sea fish, ‘Asian Carp’ which weighs around one hundred pounds and can be up to four feet long is feared to break the barriers that prevent them from entering Lake Michigan. Officials stated that ‘big head and silver carps’ might have escaped the electronic barriers that were made to stop them from progressing to the Great Lakes and now can disturb the complete ecological system of the Great Lakes.
This monstrous fish consumes a large amount of plankton, making the small sea creatures starve for food. Once they become successful in breaking the electronic barrier, they will just have to cross the Calumet River navigational lock for entering the Lake Michigan. Authorities are trying to locate these carps in water so that they can stop their progress toward Lake Michigan.
A senior adviser of Great Lake, Cameron Davis said, ” We’re going to keep throwing everything we possibly can at them to keep them out”. Expert of invasive species at Notre Dame University, David Lodge has confirmed that traces of silver carp’s DNA were present in the water of Cal-Sag Channel. It has been stated that the DNA was found in the water of Calumet River and this can be threatening for Lake Michigan as the water from this rives flows into the lake. More tests have been planned to check the presence of ‘bighead and silver carp’.
Several actions have been planned to prevent the carp’s progress toward the lake. Environmental groups want to close all locks and gateways of Illinois that lead to the lake so that the carps cannot enter Lake Michigan.
