TAMPA, FLORIDA (BNO NEWS) – University of South Florida officials are warning students that an armed intruder is at the main campus library in Tampa. One person was taken into custody, but details remain sketchy.

According to an alert posted on the university’s website, a report came in at 1.36 p.m. local time that a person armed with a bomb and a gun was in the area of the main library. Later, police learned that the alleged suspect was on a bus in the area of Parking and Transportation Services.

Students are advised to stay inside and lock their doors until the all-clear is given. “Avoid the area and report anything suspicious,” a message to students read.

Heavily armed officers remain on scene and one person was seen with his hands behind his head before being taken into custody. It was not immediately clear if he is a suspect. “USF Police has one subject in custody and has requested the Tampa Police Bomb Team to respond regarding the subject’s belongings,” the university said on its website.

Local media reports said, at one point, that a hostage negotiator had been called in, but it was not clear if there was a hostage situation. Before the person was taken into custody, a group of people left the same bus as he was on. The exact situation is still unclear, but at this point there are no reports of any injuries.
