Arizona, Mar 31 (THAINIAN NEWS) The Arizona state legislation has approved a bill that would ban abortion based on reasons of gender or race. The bill would make it illegal for women to abort the fetus because it is of a particular gender or race.

The bill was passed on Wednesday at the Arizona House of Representatives by a vote of 35-20. The bill was approved earlier by the state Senate with a vote of 21-5. The next step is for the governor to sign the bill into law.

Arizona Governor Jan Brewer has not indicated by words if she is going to sign the bill. Her spokesperson Matt Benson analyzed the probability of Brewer signing the bill.

Benson told the Associated Press that, “This legislation has just reached the governor’s desk, so she’ll be studying it in the days ahead… But it’s worth noting that Governor Brewer has an exceptionally strong pro-life record as an elected official.”

If the bill is signed into law, Arizona would be the first state in the United States to ban abortion based on reasons of gender and race. Doctors in the state who flout the law would also be penalized..
