Arizona cracks down on Teachers with heavy accents
May 25th, 2010 - 9:03 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattArizona, May 25 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Arizona is in the news again. And this time around the critics say that the State’s Department of Education is discriminatory. The Department of Education in Arizona recently told all its schools to remove all those teachers who had heavy accents. This move critics say, would discriminate against the immigrant teachers.
But the Department of Education said in its defense, that the move was for teachers who teach students who are still learning English. However critics said that the move is another anti immigration sentiment of the State. They said that the move would target the Hispanic immigrants who are teachers. It is no secret that the Hispanics have problems with pronouncing some words.
Arizona had also introduced a controversial immigration law, which will be enforceable at the end of May. The law has seen a lot of protest from most people including some states and cities that have boycotted Arizona. The law backs the police to question anybody for proof of their citizenship or immigration documents. However the law was reviewed after the protest, that it would lead to racial segregation. The police in Arizona can only ask for the documents of those people who have been arrested for other offenses.
