London, Feb 17 (THAINDIAN NEWS) A self-portrait of Andy Warhol fetched more than double of what it was estimated to fetch.

The masterpiece was sold for $17 million at the Christie’s auction House in London on Wednesday. The work is part of the 11 portraits that are known to have been created by the artist of himself.

According to the auction house, the portrait has been in private collection since 1974. This is the first time that the work has been in auction since then. The portrait is drawn on a canvas with red and white silkscreen ink. The portrait shows Warhol with his hand on his mouth. As much as the work was praised as a masterpiece, the amount that the portrait fetched shocked many people including the auction house that carried out the auction.

Warhol moved to become one of the most prolific artists in the history of the United States at the height of his career. The self portrait was believed to have been drawn in 1967 at the peak of his art career.

Christie’s failed to name the buyer of the work because he chose to remain anonymous.
