New York, Aug 29 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Rail service provider Amtrak has assured that they are working to get services back on. In the aftermath of Hurricane Irene, most of the lines of the company are not accessible largely due to power cuts. New York was left almost isolated when most of the 22 rail lines were left in ruins. Amtrak announced on Sunday that they were working on restoring services back to the city.

On Monday, some of the services had been restored. New York Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg told reporters in a press briefing that, “All in all, we are in pretty good shape because of the exhaustive steps I think we took to prepare for whatever came our way.”

Hurricane Irene is the first named-hurricane in the season. The storm caused considerable damage. President Barack Obama warned that, “Many Americans are still at risk of power outages and flooding which could get worse in the coming days as rivers swell past their banks.”

Several Americans were left in total darkness as Irene passed through several states over the weekend. It has caused the most power outages since Hurricane Gloria which struck in 1985.

Officials estimate that millions have been left in the dark and power is not expected to be restored until some weeks later.
