May 25, 2010 (Pen Men at Work): The White House of Barack Obama is having discussions with the fervent American campaigners, who espouse the just treatment of gays in the US military. Also involved in the deliberations are American legislators and the bureaucrats of the Pentagon. The discussions fundamentally revolve around a legislative push to abolish the debarment on gays in the American military from candidly expressing their homosexuality. A compromise is being sought.

The prohibition on military homosexuals from frankly asserting their sexual orientation was introduced during the Presidency of Bill Clinton in the 1990s. The prohibition was also identified as the ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ policy. The representatives of the White House now are having talks with gay rights campaigners with the mission of speedily bringing an end to the aforementioned ban.

The American policymakers are expected to put forth legislation within a few days to annul the ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ policy. Nonetheless, the execution of the legislation will have to ultimately rely on ratification from the Defense Department subsequent to an assessment by it.

If the American Congress votes in favor of the nullification of the ban, numerous years would still pass before gays and lesbians would be in a position to function in the American military without concealing their sexual orientation. The Pentagon will then have to write a new strategy after a review.
