Mar 9 (Pen Men At Work): Charisa Coulter, one of the10 foreign missionaries in Haitian custody, was accused of perpetrating the illegal abduction and transportation of 33 Haitian children out of Haiti in the aftermath of the calamitous Haitian earthquake. She was a missionary who had been freed from prison on Monday. She straight away voyaged to her homeland, America. However, her companion and the chief of her Baptist missionary group, Laura Silsby, continued to remain under arrest. The remaining 8 proselytizers were unchained on February 17 itself.
Charisa’s father, Mel Coulter, expressed contentment on hearing the news of his daughter’s release. He stated that he was delighted but declared that there is sorrowfulness as well because his daughter’s close friend, Laura Silsby, was still in prison. Silsby has also mentioned that she was thrilled to see her buddy returning to America. She pointed out, while leaving the court of law where a judge held a closed inquiry on Monday, that she is expecting her liberation soon. She was sent back to her compartment in a police station near Port-au-Prince airdrome.
Defense attorney, Louis Ricardo Chachoute, explicated that Coulter was freed because there was no proof to sustain the accusations of kidnapping and criminal connection. He envisaged that Silsby would be discharged soon as well. Chachoute also conveyed that the team of prosecution doesn’t have eyewitnesses to validate anything. However, the judge presiding over the trial has ominously said that he has detected some irregularities in Silsby’s statements. Reportedly, the Baptist group intended to take the children to the adjoining Dominican Republic to an orphanage that Silsby was making in a former hotel.
The imprisonment of the Americans came as the Haitian establishment attempted to dismantle the practice of unconstitutional adoptions in order to thwart child trafficking in the pandemonium subsequent to the cataclysmic Jan. 12 quake. Silsby, in the beginning, elucidated that the children were orphaned in the violent seismic activity that the national government of Haiti suggests has liquidated more than 2,30,000 people. However, later reports and investigation led to the discovery that the kids had been surrendered by their existing parents. Chachoute declared that the Americans only came to Haiti to lend a hand to the country. He passionately stated that they didn’t participate in any kin of child snatching and they weren’t involved in illegitimate acts.
