noxPerugia, Italy, July 7, (THAINDIAN NEWS) After Amanda Knox, now it’s the turn of her parents to face the ire of the Italian court. Curt Knox and Edda Mellas, the parents of the American convicted murderer are facing slander charges for the remarks that they had made in the year 2008 in a British newspaper about the manner in which their daughter was treated by the Italian police.

Edda Mellas appeared in a preliminary hearing on Tuesday in the Italian court of Perugia after she and her estranged husband were charged with slandering the cops who questioned their daughter in the year 2007 after her roommate Meredith Kercher was found dead. The prosecutors in the case have emphasized that the slander occurred when Amanda Knox’s parents gave an interview to a British newspaper. However, during the hearing Edda Mellas told the court that she was rather confused as to why they were being charged of slander while reiterating that she just answered a question by a reporter and had only stated what her daughter has told her. While talking about the sentence that was given to her daughter by the Italian court, Edda Mellas emphasized that Amanda Knox was innocent and expressed hope that the ‘mistake’ would fixed some day.

Amanda Knox’s parents are known to have been critical about the manner in which their daughter was convicted by the Italian court which resulted in the 22 year old being sentenced to 26 years in prison for murdering her roommate following an alleged drug-fueled sex game. Edda Mellas and Curt Knox claim that their daughter was verbally abused and beaten during the interrogation which led to her signing the murder confession.
