Perugia, Sept 23 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Jailed American student Amanda Knox may soon be walking free. The judge handling the appeal from the 24-year-old may be forced to set her free after the credibility of the main evidence used to convict her was questioned.

Knox was sentenced to 26 years in jail along with two other accomplices for the murder of British student Meredith Kercher in 2007. The trial made the international headlines and the main evidence that the police used at the time was the DNA which was found in the dress of Meredith.

DNA experts have testified to the court that the sample presented by the prosecutors did not come from the blood. That has thrown the credibility of the evidence into the balance and the prosecution team’s request to prevent additional evidence has also been denied by the judge.

Barbie Latza Nadeau who has authored a book about the murder and the trial says she expects Knox to walk free. She was quoted by British media as saying that, “Fifty per cent of criminal cases in Italy are change in some way at the appellate level. So she has a better than good chance, at least of a reduction in sentence.”
