Nov. 19, (THAINDIAN NEWS) 15-year-old Alyssa Bustamante has been held on a count of violently murdering Elizabeth Olten, aged 9. The resident of St. Martins School, Jefferson city, was made to sit in shackles and chains, in an orange jumpsuit during her trial. Alyssa, described as cheerful and fun by her friends, said that she committed the homicide because she wanted to know, “what it felt like to kill someone.” The victim was not only murdered, but was strangled, stabbed and slayed. Her grave was also dug out by Alyssa days before the actual crime, showing that Alyssa must have planned this beforehand.
Studying in Jefferson city high school, she was a good performer, keeping her grades high and her teachers happy. However, she was shifted to a Mental health school, once she tried to commit suicide and cut herself up. Her friends are stunned that Alyssa is being accused of being a murderer, and will be handled as an adult because of the level of her crimes.
Her attorney says, “We don’t throw the child, and that’s what we’re going to do if we certify her as an adult today and send her to the department of Corrections. We’re throwing away the child, and we’re signing a death sentence for Alyssa”. He added, that Alyssa cannot be called an adult just so that she can be punished. When the officers reached Alyssa while searching for the the missing Elizabeth, Alyssa herself admitted of committing the crime and led the officers to the grave she had earlier dugout, where the badly mutilated body was found.

I don’t know how a 15 year old girl can commit a murder. I would blame it on movies and the shows they put on television. But what I don’t understand is what motivated her to kill a local 9 year old girl? And where were her parents when this happened? Did they not see the hole in their back yard their daughter dug to put a body in? Maybe she was just wanting attention because she didn’t get enough. We will never know.

Danielle– studies have shown that the most “disturbed” teens (including those who commit heinous crimes) actually watch LESS TV/movies and play fewer video games than their peers. It’s a result of all-round estrangement more than it is the media. I’d assume that this girl’s mental health problems played a larger role in this than anything else.

The child is already lost. That boat has sailed. She deserve to be tried as an adult. She knows what she did was wrong but she wanted a thrill. She deserves as much mercy as she gave her victim.
