All clear after two lockdowns at the University of South Florida
October 6th, 2009 - 3:58 am ICT by BNO NewsTAMPA, FLORIDA (BNO NEWS) – One person was taken into custody on the campus of the University of South Florida after officials reported an armed intruder. Just 30 minutes after the arrest, a second suspicious person was seen on campus, prompting a new lockdown.
At 1.36 p.m. local time, the University received a report that a person armed with a bomb and gun was in the area of the main library. Later, police learned that the same person was now on a bus in the area of Parking and Transportation Services. A hostage negotiator was called in at one point, according to local media reports, but it was not clear if there was ever a hostage situation during the scare.
Images from the scene showed a group of people exiting a bus before a person came out with his hands behind his head. The person was taken into custody and officials requested the Tampa Police Bomb Squad to respond regarding the subject’s belongings.
Heavily armed police were seen searching the campus before the arrest, which took place just before 3 p.m. local time. After the arrest, the situation became more calm.
Less than 30 minutes later, however, officials issued a new alert, warning students to stay inside. According to the University’s website, a white male was seen in the Cooper Hall area, wearing a black tank top and a cowboy top. He was allegedly carrying a black puppy and a large hunting knife.
About an hour later, at 4.23 p.m., officials issued the all-clear for both incidents.
No one was reported injured in both incidents.
