Jan 18 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Alexis Hutchinson could face an imprisonment. The 21-year-old Army cook from California missed the Army airfield in Savannah, Georgia on November 5th. The single mom of a 10-month-old Kamani refused deployment to Afghanistan for taking care of her son. Alexis Hutchinson’s mother promised to take care of the child earlier as Alexis Hutchinson was assigned to Afghanistan. However, the physically weak woman has to take care of three relatives and has other family responsibilities too. For this hectic schedule she could not manage to nurture her grand son.
Kevin Larson who happens to be an Army spokesperson said, “She didn’t do her duty. They know their deployment dates. They have to show up. Otherwise, they have to face the consequences.” She might have to face two years imprisonment. 10 days after she missed the flight, she was arrested. Kamani was handed to child welfare services when his mother was arrested. He had to stay their for 2 days after which his grand mother took him. According to a source, Alexis Hutchinson has said, “It is outrageous that they would deploy a single mother without a complete and current family plan. I would like to find someone I trust who take care of my son, but I cannot force my family to do this. They are dealing with their own health issues.” The Defense Department puts that there are 70,500 or more single parents on duty. All that they need to do is ask for a child care plan.
Rai Sue Sussman, the lawyer of Alexis Hutchinson said the Army told Alexis Hutchinson that they will give her some time to make arrangements for the child. However, they did not give her the extended time that they promised and she was told to deploy.
