June 30, (THAINDIAN NEWS) The US National Hurricane Center said that Alex has picked up enough wind speeds to become the first hurricane on Tuesday. The hurricane is expected to make landfall on northern Mexico or southern Texas. President Barack Obama has declared a state of emergency in Texas and the Mexican authorities are taking similar measures as well. According to some reports there could be wind speeds of up to 80 mph. It is expected to hit Mexico or Texas late on Wednesday or early Thursday.
The oil spill spot on the Gulf Of Mexico is however expected to be clear from the path of the storm. However the massive waves created by the storm may disrupt clean up operations greatly and push the oil further inland. Heavy rainfall is also expected as an after effect of the hurricane. The authorities have said that additional strengthening of the storm is expected before the landfall. Residents have been warned about the flash floods. Earlier this week sandbags were distributed in southern Texas counties and Gulf Coast of Mexico area.
Alex will be the first Atlantic hurricane to form in June since 1995. President Barack Obama’s declaration has made the FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency take all the necessary steps to co-ordinate the safety operations. The FEMA has urged the Americans to closely monitor the storm and follow the instruction of the authorities for the safety measures. The storm has already claimed 10 lives altogether in Nicaragua, Guatemala and El Salvador over the weekend due to heavy rains and landslides.
