Air France Rio crash: Jet plunged in minutes
May 27th, 2011 - 11:32 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattParis, May 27 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Investigators say the Air France plane that crashed into the Atlantic Ocean in 2009 might have been due to failed speed probes. The full investigation into the cause of the crash that killed 228 people will not be known until somewhere next year.
The initial findings were published on the Internet just days after the flight recorders were recovered from the seabed. French investigators determined after studying the flight data that the flight’s crew struggled in vain to control the plane after they started having contradictory readings on the speed probes.
The Air France’s flight AF 447 was traveling from the Brazilian capital of Rio de Janeiro to France when the accident happened. After the flight recorders were retrieved earlier this month, there have been several reports in the media regarding the cause of the crash. The investigators stated that they decided to release the initial report to give the official account of the accident.
Ice has been blamed for the malfunction of the speed probes. Air France released a statement on its website after the initial report was released. The statement warned against making any rush decisions regarding how the plane crashed. The airliner theorized that, “the initial problem was the failure of the speed probes.”
