Ahoy! Today is ‘Talk Like a Pirate Day 2010!’

John Baur and Mark Summers, who are the inhabitants of Albany, created this day. The celebration of a day to talk in the pirate lingo started off as a joke, but it gained worldwide acceptance and is a popular day in the calendars of the pirate enthusiasts.
According to folklore, John and Mark were playing racquetball one day, when suddenly the ball hit one of them hard. And then he said ‘aaarrr’ while yelling in pain, and that is where the idea for the day was born. Though this sports injury took place on 6th of June 1995, yet they choose to anoint 19th September as the “Talk like a Pirate Day” because that is the birth date of Summer’s ex-wife, as it would be quite easy to remember.
The duo sent a letter to humorist Dave Barry about their invented day as joke. But little did they know that Dave would do a lot to popularize it and turn it into an international event.
