UNITED NATIONS (BNO NEWS) – The joint African Union-United Nations peacekeeping force in Darfur is trying to verify reports of fighting in the western part of the Sudanese region, the United Nations said on Tuesday.

The head of the joint peacekeeping force mission called on all parties to refrain from any action that could thwart ongoing peace efforts.

After almost seven years of fighting, resulting in at least 300,000 deaths and 2.7 million refugees, a cessation of hostilities had been agreed last week in Doha, Qatar between the the Government and the rebel Justice and Equality Movement.

“UNAMID (African Union/United Nations Hybrid operation in Darfur) is particularly concerned that, if confirmed, the reported acts of violence would be coming at a time that good progress is being made in the quest for peace and stability in the region,” the mission said in a news release concerning the clashes in Jebel Marra.
