‘Afghan Girl’ Photographer Recalls His Experience

afghan-girlSep 18, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Steve McCurry - the Photographer who became famous after the publication of the famous ‘Afghan girl’ photograph recalled the experience in an interview given to a reputed media entity recently. The first image of the girl was captured by him at a refugee camp in Nasir Bagh of Pakistan in 1984. The girl became famous after her photo appeared on the cover page of the National Geographic magazine a year later. Her wide eyed look and expression of desperation struck a chord wit the readers of the magazine several years back. The image also made the photographer famous. Magnum the noted photographic agency signed him after the publication of the image.

The photographer also took another image of the girl 17 years later. The photographer had a harrowing time locating the girl who grew up to be a woman by that time. He finally found her and saw tat she had become a married woman with three kids. The photographer recalled that he did not even know the name of the girl and hence found it extremely hard to find her whereabouts. The photographer found her for the second time in 2002.

It was quite an emotional experience for the photographer who was born in Philadelphia. He also won many awards for hos work in war ravaged areas in former Yugoslavia and Lebanon. However, he feels that it is Afghanistan that makes him feel nostalgic even after so many years. His images that deal with human emotions and feelings battered by the stress of warfare and poverty has brought him many accolades in his long career.
