Boise, Idaho, Mar 14, (THAINDIAN NEWS) A private prison company as well as state prison officials have found themselves amidst legal troubles after a lawsuit was filed by the American Civil Liberties Union on Thursday. According to the lawsuit, the Idaho Correctional Center subjected its inmates to such extensive violence that it was popularly referred to as the ‘gladiator school’ among the inmates. ACLU has filed the lawsuit in United States District Court in Boise against the Corrections Corp. of America Inc., which is known to be the biggest private prison operator based in Nashville, Tennessee.
The lawsuit filed by ACLU, which is demanding $155 million in damages, further goes on to state that the prison in Idaho is outrageously violent as in order to manage the prison, the prison guards resort to mercilessly beating the prisoners by other inmates. It has been alleged that the wounded inmates are not even provided with medical facilities in order to save money as well as conceal the extent to which the prisoners have suffered injuries. The extent to which the violence prevails in the Idaho Correctional Center is said to completely violate the constitutional ban that exists on brutal and inhuman punishment to inmates.
While talking about the conditions prevailing in the correctional center, ACLU senior attorney Stephen Pevar emphasized that the country should be ashamed to send inmates to the facility owing to its high level of violence. However, company vice president of facility operations Steven Conry had earlier stressed the high safety levels of the facility and reiterated that the facility was well-run.
