A man frustrated with his stepson’s truancy from school and a constant refusal to do homework went beyond him , he caned the son for about 100 times over two hours last September, in Singapore.

The boy’s cry alarmed the neighbors and called the police. The boy’s stepfather, the owner of a hair salon, was arrested. The son suffered from multiple bruises and was warded at KK Women’s amp; Children’s Hospital for eight days where he was treated with painkillers and creams. The child was placed placed at Sunbeam Place, a home for abused and neglected children, in Choa Chu Kang.

On Wednesday, the boy’s stepfather was jailed for nine months and also pleaded guilty to a charge for the Children and Young Persons Act and might receive a maximum of four year’s jail including a fine of $4,000.

According to court documents, the boy was scolded by his mother on September 17 last year for lying to his teachers that he had taken a spelling test in school and later the mother then handed over two tied rattan canes to the stepfather who struck him on his buttocks, arms and back over a two-hour period.

The court also heard about the boy’s behaviour and the teacher’s complaints over the past two years told by the boy’s parents. Assistant Public Prosecutor Puvaneswari told the court that this was not the first time the man had ill-treated his stepson. Early 2007, the man had received a warning from the police where the boy’s teacher noticed the marks on the boy’s body and made a report.
