$790 million in preparedness grants awarded to nine federal programs

(BNO NEWS) – Nearly $790 million in Preparedness Grants were awarded to nine federal programs to assist state, local and tribal governments and the private sector in strengthening preparedness for disasters, terrorism acts and other emergencies, U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Janet Napolitano announced on Thursday.
“These grants play a major role in our efforts to work with our state, local, tribal and territorial and private sector partners to build a national culture of readiness and resilience,” said Napolitano. “We continue to focus on maximizing efficiency and value while prioritizing risk in awarding grants to strengthen our nation’s security.”
The award come as part of the fiscal year 2010 budget and also incorporates input from state, local, tribal and private sector partners. Awards will be made on a rolling basis over the summer.
Four of the projects awarded funding focus on terrorism prevention and protection, mainly in different means of transportation. The rest targets emergency response, vehicle and driver protection and safeguarding critical sites such as chemical facilities and nuclear plants.
