A 77-year-old pensioner Aiden Cassidy was rescued just moments before his mobility scooter exploded in flames. Cassidy who is a stroke victim and paralyzed on the left side was driving in his mobility scooter with his care-giver when the incident happened.

Care-giver Anita Coombs was walking towards Cassidy when she saw a tiny flame under the scooter’s seat. She reacted immediately and pulled Cassidy out of the scooter. The next second, the vehicle went up in flames and Cassidy is grateful to his carer.

He said “Anita saved my life. I could have been barbecued if it wasn’t for her. I couldn’t get away from the scooter because I had a stroke last year. The flames were coming over the back where the batteries were and were nearly touching my feet. One of the batteries exploded and the next thing I knew it went up.”

Anita agreed when she gave her version of how events unfolded. She called the episode a lucky escape explaining that if she hadn’t been there, Cassidy would have probably been burnt badly.

The incident happened on Sunday and Cassidy was on his way to a car boot. Cassidy has since been given another mobility scooter by a friend.
