The main region effected was Northern California but residents of Ferndale could feel it too. Injuries have not yet been reported even though power outages and some destruction has been. News has also come in, that the authorities are taking precautions and evacuating some places. The aftershocks can still be felt as far as San Francisco and even Oregon. San Francisco has been feeling small quakes for some days now but tsunami alert has not been issued. The Bayshore mall was closed soon after people had to be taken out in ambulances following the quake. Eyreka’s busiest area is the Broadway, that was clogged with traffic since people tried to make a getaway.

When asked, the residents said that the quake was ‘monstrous’ and that its duration was for 10 seconds. Sources claim that the actual duration was as long as 30 seconds and the quake was powerful enough to usurp the power poles. They also described it as ‘rolling in all directions quake’. Richard Allen, a seismologist with the UC Berkeley, said that the earthquake was caused at the meeting point of three tectonic plates called the Mendocino Triple Junction. It is also an active area for seismic activity in San Andreas. The epicenter lies 20 miles to the west-northwest of Ferndale.

The same area (25 miles near Eureka), was hit in 1994 by an earthquake measuring 6.5 and causing a mass death of 70 people and injuring 9,000 others. Updates are expected to be released in some time. The residents have been advised to stay away from the power lines.
