60-inutesJuly 12, (THAINDIAN NEWS) CBS covered the life of the children of Haiti post the devastating earthquake in its one hour episode of ‘60 Minutes’. The show revealed that more than 50% of the victims of the earthquake are under the age of 18. Therefore there is a significant population of children who are now on the streets with risk of diseases, sexual assault and even the threat of modern day slavery.

According to the Moise Vaval and Joe Knittig of Global Orphan Project, the children need to be immediately provided with shelter in the form of makeshift tents and food. Joe Knittig told correspondent Scott Pelley that when he first came to the area he found a child with a cup of flour.

He also found some children asking their caretaker whether they were going to die. Another tragic instance was highlighted on the show which talked about a children’s home crumbling to the ground while the children were out for prayers under a mango tree.

According to most experts the media fails to follow through with the attention at a particular place after the event has subsided. The ‘60 Minutes’ episode showed that the suffering of the children still continues in spite of the attempts of rescue and rehabilitation.

The show focused on the several groups that have turned up in the area to help the victims and also protect them from the child slavery that is legalized in the country. The director of the Global Orphan project, Moise Vaval who has been shown as an active participant in the process of helping out the orphaned children, also revealed that he is missing his own 8 year old son Mark-Jean after the earthquake.
